“Do not boast about tomorrow, for you do not know what a day may bring forth. Let another man praise you, and not your own mouth; a stranger, and not your own lips.”
The definition of boast according to the Free Dictionary is: “to glorify oneself in speech; talk in a self-admiring way; to speak with excessive pride.”
What is it that causes us to want to boast and brag about ourselves? Why is it that we desire to glorify ourselves?
The answer to this of course is not easy. Some of us have a bigger problem with boasting and pride than others. I think one of the biggest reasons that we fall into this trap is because we feel insecure about ourselves, so we try to convince ourselves and others that we are secure through boasting and self-edification.
The problem is that boasting and bragging never really satisfies our soul. In fact the more we do it, the less effective it becomes and the more insecure we become.
When we truly recognize that God is in control of all things and that He is the provider of all things, there is nothing more for us to boast about except Him. It is a true relationship with our loving Lord that washes away our insecurities.
Remember, God is in control and that He is the provider of all.
Lord, everything that we have comes from you, including tomorrow. May we boast only about you and not feel the need to glorify ourselves.
